Klei in Sydney

We will be showing our wares at the pyd design market which takes place on Sunday 26th as part of the Danks Street Festival in Waterloo.
The pyd building is located at 197 young st.
For more infomation visit the pyd website.

Porcelain rings

This style ring was our first foray into making jewellery from clay.
Initially we thought we may some control over the sizing but the stoneware firing process had other ideas! We have found it impossible to gauge how much each ring will shrink in the kiln.
These rings are not cast from a mold, they are hand built so the form is never the same.

Craft and Design as a Career

We are very pleased to be taking part in Craft Victoria's Month about Making.
A Month About Making is a festival of public events, workshops, residencies, exhibitions and forums focusing on the practical and conceptual elements of making, inherent in craft and design. Throughout August, A Month About Making will explore current trends in craft and design practice, professional development opportunities for practitioners, contemporary craft and design philosophy and writing, and the place for 'making' within creative and cultural industries.
Barbara and I will be speaking at the Craft and Design as a Career seminar taking place on the 29th of August.
There is a interesting and varied line up of people talking about their work and the different experiences they have encountered along the way.

Architectural ring

Double sided rivet rings

Normally "two faced" is not a positive way of describing someone but "two faced" things are a completely different matter.
Our rivet rings include a double sided porcelain disc that can rotate to show both sides.

Magnolia Square in Malvern

Magnolia Square is back in Malvern this Thursday to Saturday.
This pop up shopping concept is thoroughly unique and overflowing with products and ideas that are exceptional in their originality, quality & style. Drawing on a growing stable of over 150 talented artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets, the product mix is diverse and unique.

We have made a limited run, thirty to be exact, of these notepad and coloured pencil sets that will make their first appearance at our stall on Thursday.
The blanco note books are made from 100% recycled paper and Barbara has hand drawn and coloured all the cover images.
What can I say about the pencils, Who doesn't love a pencil made from a twig!

Out of sight, out of mind.

These porcelain faceted components were made over a year ago but we just couldn't work out what to do with them.
They were put away and forgotten about.
Barbara found them while looking for something else and they sat on our workbench for about 2 weeks (They were too pretty to put back in a drawer and forget about again).
Seeing them sitting there every day helped in keeping them at the forefront of our minds and we found a way to use them.

Stig Twig

We are huge fans of Stig lindberg, particully the bold graphic tableware he created for Gustavsberg.
This range was inspired by his leaf pattern that he used on a variety of items in the 1960s.

Here is a preview of some new figurines that will make their debut at Magnolia Square.
The event runs from the 22nd to 24th of November at the Malvern Town Hall. It is a roomier venue than past fairs so there will be lots to of new things to see. Barbara and I did it together last time so we could take turns shopping and minding the stand.

Girl with bird

This figurine, by Barbara van Oost, is available from Birds Gallery in Melbourne. They also stock a large selection of our new jewellery.
If you are near Kew its worth checking the beautiful works by a select group of local and international artists that they represent.

disc set

This set is made of sterling silver and porcelain. The silver has been brushed and polished giving it a blingy surface that we have never tried before. I do like the contrast with the matt porcelain.

Pebble Necklace

All our pebble necklaces are one offs. Firstly we stain, mold and burnish the porcelain beads.
Then, after firing, we lay all the beads on our work bench and piece together necklaces.
It always takes a couple of goes but we know immediately when we have it.

Funghi pots

These pots make me think of mushrooms pushing their heads up through the earth.
Like mushrooms they look their best in small clusters.
All these pots were burnished just before they dried which makes them feel so smooth to touch.

Stainless steel animals

Our porcelain animals brooches have stainless steel cousins.

Facets

The angles in these pendants were hand sanded. Very Messy work.
We glazed the inside rim and left the facets matt. I like the way the middle section catches the light.
They are strung on a thick stainless steel cable.
